Huh-uh: Barry G and the Dream Jam Kids Album, Review & Giveaway

by EJ on 09/17/12

If you and the kids caught the most recent Peanut Butter & Jams session at World Cafe Live in Wilmington, Delaware, then you'll remember Barry G and the Dream Jam Band. Founding member Barry G, whose musical influences include The Beatles, B.B King, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Eric Clapton and James Burton, played the guitar with various rock bands and composed original songs before discovering his love of playing guitar for kids. He said that, "I can't imagine a more meaningful call to action than hearing kids ask me to play my guitar for them". Barry G has toured the country to perform at festivals like Kidzapalooza, Taste of Chicago. Your kids might remember him as a guest performer for PBS TV's Sprout, "Chica's Big Birthday Surprise".

Barry G's first solo album, Huh-uh, was produced by award-winning songwriter and producer Rick Certoff (Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, Ron Howard's How the Grinch Stole Christmas). Inspirations for this album include work songs, sea shanties, traditional folk and blues and field recordings that date back to the 1930s. The voices of the Dream Jam Kids' encourage listeners to sing along.

My two monsters ML and AJ spent the afternoon previewing the new solo release Huh-uh. I personally loved the folksy and traditional elements. Hubby and I could easily listen to this in the car with the kids in tow, without losing our minds. The lyrics are intelligent and accessible, never over the top and many tracks are both lively and soothing. The musicianship is superb and I appreciated that Barry G understands that kids deserve good, intelligent music, too. Tracks range from folksy to country to blues and more.

Our all-around favorite track was "Captain Was A Monkey", which pulled from traditional sea shanties in melody and rhythm. I couldn't help but sing along to that track and the kids giggled at the storyline, a monkey captaining a ship at sea, who doesn't really know where he's going or how to get there. While the first half of the album had the kids up off the couch and dancing, the last few tracks like "Just Chillin" and "Hello Hello" toned things down and ended with "Are You Sleepy", putting them both in the perfect mood for nap time.

Definitely check out Barry G and the Dream Jam Kids, Huh-uh!
